A news report revealed that the Federal Government of Nigeria banned teaching in indigenous languages, declaring an English-only policy in schools during a British Council meeting in Abuja.
In response, one user commented, “Make dem just sell the country give everybody em share.”
While frustration with government policies is understandable, this type of comment is hyperbolic and unhelpful. Selling a country is neither a solution nor a practical idea — it trivializes the serious issue of cultural erosion and education policy. Indigenous languages are vital to preserving identity, history, and culture, and reducing the discussion to jokes about “selling Nigeria” distracts from meaningful advocacy.
Criticism should push for accountability and reform, not exaggeration. Protecting education and heritage requires engagement, not despair-driven humor.
