An X user identified as @MFaaarees_ made a controversial post that read, “SHARIA LAW STAYS IN NIGERIA! IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, YOU CAN LEAVE!!!” This statement immediately stirred outrage online as many Nigerians criticized it for promoting religious intolerance.
Nigeria is a secular nation with multiple religions, ethnicities, and cultures. Forcing Sharia law — which applies specifically to Muslims and certain northern states — on an entire country disregards the constitutional freedom of religion. Such comments can deepen division and fuel unnecessary tension between regions and faiths.
While people have the right to express their beliefs, no one has the right to impose their religious laws on others. Nigeria’s unity depends on respecting its diversity, not using religion as a weapon to segregate or silence those who believe differently.
