A post attributed to Evangelist Jane Emmanuel claimed that men should not marry single mothers because, according to her, many are seeking financial support rather than a husband. The statement quickly sparked backlash and debate. One comment openly endorsed the view, declaring: “It’s bitter truth. Let’s leave sentiment aside.”
This response attempts to legitimize a sweeping generalization by labeling it “truth.” In reality, it reduces diverse women and complex life circumstances into a single, dismissive motive. Single motherhood arises from many situations—loss, abandonment, divorce, or choice—and does not automatically translate to dependency or deceit. Framing empathy as “sentiment” allows prejudice to masquerade as realism. Such comments do not promote honesty; they reinforce stigma and discourage nuanced thinking. Human relationships cannot be responsibly judged by stereotypes disguised as hard truths.
