A Nigerian immigrant in the UK recently shared a heartfelt post, saying, “2024, God gave me and my wife a house in the UK,” celebrating their achievement and drawing congratulations from many. However, a few comments took a negative turn, with one user remarking, “Some of us know say na mortgage, dat you will continue paying for 20-30 years. Make una no dey scope or whyn us,” implying that a mortgaged home is not worth celebrating.

Such comments detract from the joy and hard work behind the accomplishment. Owning a home, whether outright or through a mortgage, is a milestone that requires perseverance, especially for immigrants navigating a new life abroad. Social media should be a place to uplift others’ achievements rather than diminishing them with unnecessary judgments.
