The Nigerian Military recently confirmed that it uncovered a plot by some of its officers—ranging from captains to a brigadier-general—to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government. The revelation raised serious national concerns, given Nigeria’s history with military coups and the long-term damage they caused to democracy, human rights, and economic stability.
Following the announcement, public reactions flooded social media. While many Nigerians condemned the plot and called for strict accountability, others responded with alarming cynicism. One extreme comment read: “Make the army try hard next time to succeed.”
The remark appeared to dismiss the grave consequences of a successful coup, including potential violence, instability, and international isolation. Critics argued that encouraging or joking about military takeovers reflects dangerous disillusionment with civilian governance and ignores the painful lessons of Nigeria’s past.
