After the heartbreaking incident in which Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a Nigerian Army officer, died after being allegedly set ablaze by his wife during a domestic dispute in Akwa Ibom, one user commented, “The husband should have walked away.” While walking away is often the safest choice in heated situations, this comment unfairly places blame on the victim rather than condemning the act of violence itself. It’s easy to judge after tragedy strikes, but no one expects to be attacked by their partner. The focus should be on addressing domestic violence, not shifting responsibility to the person who lost his life.
