A disturbing video showed public school students in Oyo State engaging in a violent cult clash, armed with machetes, bottles, knives, and stones. In response, one user commented, “See Yariba heritage and culture,” a very insensitive and discriminatory remark.
This comment unfairly links a criminal act to an entire ethnic group, promoting tribal hatred and stereotyping. Violence and cultism are societal problems, not cultural traits tied to any tribe. Such statements deepen ethnic divisions instead of addressing the real issue — the growing problem of youth violence and the failure of moral and educational systems.
We must learn to condemn wrongdoing without weaponizing ethnicity. Crime has no tribe; it has only perpetrators.
