But jumping straight to referendum talk drags an already painful moment into political division. It subtly pushes separatist sentiment, as if breaking the country apart is the immediate solution to every security issue.
Comments like this don’t help the victims, don’t address the security failure, and don’t offer any practical idea for preventing future attacks. Instead, they inflame tension between regions, feeding the belief that Nigeria is better off divided. In a sensitive moment when people are scared and angry, such statements can escalate mistrust and deepen tribal lines rather than pushing for unity and real accountability.
