A lady shared a detailed account on X explaining how her ex allegedly scammed her of ₦40 million in 2024, narrating the events that led to the loss and her efforts to seek accountability. The post focused on a specific individual’s actions and the breach of trust involved.

In response, one comment read, “Women should not be trusted.”

This reaction is deeply flawed. It takes the wrongdoing of one man and irrationally redirects blame onto an entire gender. Rather than condemning fraud and deceit, the comment erases the victim’s experience and reinforces a harmful stereotype against women.

Scamming is a crime committed by individuals, not genders. Generalizing trustworthiness based on sex promotes prejudice and distracts from the real issue: accountability for financial fraud. Such comments silence victims, discourage others from speaking up, and shift focus away from justice toward baseless gender hostility.
