The FBI announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a Nigerian national who has been on the run for over two decades on fraud charges. While some focused on the seriousness of the case, one insensitive user shifted the conversation, writing, “Yorubas must una disgrace Nigerians?” simply because the suspect’s name. Yes, the name may suggest he is Yoruba, but that does not make fraud a Yoruba affair. Crime is individual, not tribal. Such comments unfairly brand millions of innocent people and deepen unnecessary divisions instead of addressing the real issue—fraud.
