A Twitter personality recently raised alarm about the dangerous spread of tribalism in Nigeria, but instead of uniting against the issue, many fueled it further with divisive remarks. One disturbing comment read: “Yoruba are the most tribalistic people in Nigeria. It is rooted deeply in their DNA.” Such statements are harmful and unfair. Tribalism is not tied to DNA; it is a societal problem fueled by ignorance, prejudice, and lack of tolerance. Labeling an entire ethnic group this way only worsens division. If we truly want change, we must confront tribalism with understanding, not amplify it with stereotypes.
