The FBI’s announcement of a $10,000 reward for the arrest of a Nigerian man wanted for fraud should have sparked conversations about justice and accountability. Instead, it quickly turned tribal in the comment section. One user wrote, “As lazy as the Yorubas are, they are the number one in committing fraud.” This is both false and harmful. Fraud is not a tribal trait but an individual’s crime. Tagging an entire ethnic group as “lazy” and “fraudulent” is divisive and dangerous. We must condemn crime without weaponizing ethnicity, otherwise we shift blame from criminals to innocent people.
