A man narrated how his friend Ejike took his girlfriend to the UK, supported her through school, and began building a life with her—only for the relationship to reportedly break down after she started contributing to household bills. As expected, the story triggered a wave of harsh and emotionally charged reactions online.
Among them was a mocking comment that read: “You carry Nigeria woman go abroad”, accompanied by a laughing emoji. The statement suggests that a man should fear taking his partner abroad, as though providing a better life is a mistake in itself.
This mindset is deeply problematic. It reinforces harmful stereotypes about Nigerian women, promotes suspicion in relationships, and frames progress or relocation as a threat rather than an opportunity. While the story may raise valid concerns about compatibility, expectations, or financial strain, reducing it to a blanket joke about Nigerian women is unfair, unhelpful, and only fuels further division between genders.
